Blow-Outs & Winterizations

What are they?

Winterizations typically begin mid-October thru mid-November.  During a winterization, a high-powered compressor is hooked up to your sprinkler system and blows air throughout the entire system forcing all of the water out.  If you procrastinate in having yours done and the ground begins to freeze, sprinkler pipes will need to be unfrozen using blow torches and the process takes much longer and is more difficult.

Unfortunate for the homeowner, there are people who will blow-out a system for a greatly discounted price, but what they may use is a smaller compressor with less force which may NOT blow all of the air out of the system - this can cause damage to the pipes and valves if the ground freezes (see below) and will mandate repairs for you in the spring.  Delaying and/or having your system winterized does NOT guarantee that your system will be free of breakage and spring repairs.

Why are they important?

During the winter, the ground can freeze.  When water freezes, it expands, and when it expands inside your main sprinkler line and system, it can cause the pipes and valves to crack and break and can ruin your entire system.  To protect your automatic system, you will not only need to turn off your system for the winter, but you will also need to have your sprinkler system winterized or “blown out” to protect your investment.
